Relationships

Relationships affect every area of our lives. The relationship we have with ourselves, our creator or higher power, our partner, family, friends, coworkers, and even strangers all influence our peace, stress, happiness, and overall quality of life.

Over time I’ve realized that many relationship problems start within ourselves. If we are constantly stressed, angry, insecure, overwhelmed, or seeking validation from others, it becomes difficult to build healthy relationships externally. The more at peace we are with ourselves, the easier it becomes to communicate clearly, set healthy boundaries, handle conflict, and connect with others in a meaningful way.

No relationship is perfect. People are different. We all have different experiences, beliefs, personalities, and expectations. Misunderstandings happen. Life happens. But I believe many relationships improve when we learn to listen more, react less emotionally, communicate honestly, and try to understand instead of simply trying to be understood.

I also believe our relationship with whatever higher power, creator, or spiritual belief system we connect with can help guide us through difficult times and provide a greater sense of purpose and perspective.

The same principles tend to apply across many areas of life:

  • awareness
  • communication
  • respect
  • boundaries
  • accountability
  • forgiveness
  • patience
  • growth

Relationships are not just about finding the right people. They are also about becoming the type of person capable of creating healthier relationships.

Trust and observe consistency.
Listen to understand, not just to respond.

On this page I’ll share some of the books, tools, lessons, experiences, and perspectives that have helped me better understand myself and improve my relationships over the years.
